LEVEL 2 FUNCTIONAL SKILLS QUALIFICATION IN MATHEMATICS

Objective

The primary purpose of the Open Awards Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics at Level 2 is to support you to progress to the next level of learning in this subject. It could also support your entry to employment or your development within employment. The qualification was designed to help you develop your Mathematics skills in a practical, rather than academic, context.

Target Audience

This qualification is suitable for learners studying the following:

  •   People looking to work towards higher Maths qualifications including GCSEs
  •   People doing a supported internship
  •   People doing a vocational learning course

What does this qualification cover?

To achieve the qualification, you will be required to commit to approximately 55 hours of guided learning.


You will learn to deal with Mathematics problems that will help you develop and apply your mathematical skills, through appropriate reasoning and decision making, to solve realistic problems of increasing complexity.

Examples of the types of skills you will develop include:


  •   • use numbers of any size;
  •   • read, write and make use of positive and negative integers of any size;
  •   • handle relationships between measurements of various kinds;
  •   • use angles and coordinates when involving position and direction;
  •   • construct, interpret and evaluate a range of statistical diagrams;
  •   • calculate and interpret probabilities;

Entry Requirements

There are no age restrictions for working towards this qualification and no specific prior achievements required. However, it may be useful to have completed a Mathematics qualification at Level 1/ Academy internal assessment.

Assessment Methods

The course covers the following assessments,


  •   • Online assessment: Online assessment is available for this qualification, and live online assessments are now bookable. Sample assessments can now be scheduled on our Surpass platform.
  •   • Remote invigilation: Learners are now able to complete online/onscreen external assessments at home using our remote invigilation solution.

Qualification structure:

This qualification has one external assessment divided into 2 sections.


  •   Section A: The non-calculator section
  •   Section B: The calculator section
